    God vs Science

A science professor begins his school year with a lecture to the students, "Let me explain the problem science has with religion." The atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class and then asks one of his new students to stand.
    "You're a Christian, aren't you, son?"
    "Yes sir," the student says.
    "So you believe in God?"
    "Absolutely."
    "Is God good?"
    "Sure! God's good."
"Is God all-powerful? Can God do anything?"
    "Yes."
    "Are you good or evil?"
    "The Bible says I'm evil."
The professor grins knowingly. "Aha! The Bible!" He considers for a moment. "Here's one for you. Let's say there's a sick person over here and you can cure him. You can do it. Would you help him? Would you try?"
    "Yes sir, I would."
    "So you're good...!"
    "I wouldn't say that."
"But why not say that? You'd help a sick and maimed person if you could. Most of us would if we could. But God doesn't."
The student does not answer, so the professor continues. "He doesn't, does he? My brother was a Christian who died of cancer, even though he prayed to Jesus to heal him. How is this Jesus good? Hmmm? Can you answer that one?"
    The student remains silent.
"No, you can't, can you?" the professor says. He takes a sip of water from a glass on his desk to give the student time to relax.
"Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?"
    "Er...yes," the student says.
    "Is Satan good?"
The student doesn't hesitate on this one. "No."
"Then where does Satan come from?"
    The student falters. "From God"
"That's right. God made Satan, didn't he? Tell me, son. Is there evil in this world?"
    "Yes, sir."
"Evil's everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything, correct?"
    "Yes."
"So who created evil?" The professor continued, "If God created everything, then God created evil, since evil exists, and according to the principle that our works define who we are, then God is evil."
Again, the student has no answer. "Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things, do they exist in this world?"
The student squirms on his feet. "Yes."
    "So who created them?"
The student does not answer again, so the professor repeats his question. "Who created them?" There is still no answer. Suddenly the lecturer breaks away to pace in front of the classroom. The class is mesmerized. "Tell me," he continues onto another student. "Do you believe in Jesus Christ, son?"
The student's voice betrays him and cracks. "Yes, professor, I do."
The old man stops pacing. "Science says you have five senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Have you ever seen Jesus?"
"No sir. I've never seen Him."
"Then tell us if you've ever heard your Jesus?"
    "No, sir, I have not."
"Have you ever felt your Jesus, tasted your Jesus or smelt your Jesus? Have you ever had any sensory perception of Jesus Christ, or God for that matter?"
    "No, sir, I'm afraid I haven't."
"Yet you still believe in him?"
    "Yes."
"According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your God doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?"
"Nothing," the student replies. "I only have my faith."
"Yes, faith," the professor repeats. "And that is the problem science has with God. There is no evidence, only faith."
The student stands quietly for a moment, before asking a question of His own. "Professor, is there such thing as heat?"
"Yes," the professor replies. "There's heat."
"And is there such a thing as cold?"
    "Yes, son, there's cold too."
    "No sir, there isn't."
The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested. The room suddenly becomes very quiet. The student begins to explain. "You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, unlimited heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don't have anything called 'cold'. We can hit up to 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold; otherwise we would be able to go colder than the lowest -458 degrees."
"Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-458 F) is the total absence of heat. You see, sir, cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat we can measure in thermal units because heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it."
Silence across the room. A pen drops somewhere in the classroom, sounding like a hammer.
"What about darkness, professor. Is there such a thing as darkness?"
"Yes," the professor replies without hesitation. "What is night if it isn't darkness?"
"You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is not something; it is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light, but if you have no light constantly you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? That's the meaning we use to define the word."
"In reality, darkness isn't. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?"
The professor begins to smile at the student in front of him. This will be a good semester. "So what point are you making, young man?"
"Yes, professor. My point is, your philosophical premise is flawed to start with, and so your conclusion must also be flawed."
The professor's face cannot hide his surprise this time. "Flawed? Can you explain how?"
"You are working on the premise of duality," the student explains. "You argue that there is life and then there's death; a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought."
"It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life, just the absence of it."
"Now tell me, professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?"
"If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, young man, yes, of course I do."
"Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?"
The professor begins to shake his head, still smiling, as he realizes where the argument is going. A very good semester, indeed.
"Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you now not a scientist, but a preacher?"
The class is in uproar. The student remains silent until the commotion has subsided.
"To continue the point you were making earlier to the other student, let me give you an example of what I mean."
The student looks around the room. "Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the professor's brain?" The class breaks out into laughter.
"Is there anyone here who has ever heard the professor's brain, felt the professor's brain, touched or smelt the professor's brain? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, with all due respect, sir."
"So if science says you have no brain, how can we trust your lectures, sir?"
Now the room is silent. The professor just stares at the student, his face unreadable.
Finally, after what seems an eternity, the old man answers. "I guess you'll have to take them on faith."
"Now, you accept that there is faith, and, in fact, faith exists with life," the student continues. "Now, sir, is there such a thing as evil?"
Now uncertain, the professor responds, "Of course, there is. We see it everyday. It is in the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil."
To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light."
    The professor sat down.

    It's been a busy day...

I thought today would be like any other but it was quite different. First a friend of mine, her husband was in the local newspaper as he gets to fly a brand new $15million helicopter and had to travel to Italy to learn how to fly it - nice job!  Although he did get sick of pizza!!

For the first time ever! my car passed it's warrant of fitness (WOF) YAY!!!

Instead of doing the housework - if my mother walked in now she's have a fit - I went to the hairdressers and am now having the best hair day all year!

And since the weather was soo gloriously sunny and warm I didn't feel up to cooking tea either so I took my girls and a friend to Cobb & Co. for dinner.  After, we waited til dark and drove the girls around to check out the houses entered in the 'Light Up Your House' competition.  Every other house was Baylee's favourite.  I got to have a play with my camera - I'm still learning and learnt tonight a tripod would've made things a lot easier.  For those who live locally Oriental Street and Kawaroa Close were the best.

    Christmas Lights

A scary thing did happed this evening - we had an earthquake.  Luckily it was on the other side of the Island and quite deep.  It caused a bit of damage over there, but no injuries.  Still -  very scary. I had an impromptu lesson with Baylee on what to do if she feels an earthquake.

Hope you all have a blessed Christmas with friends and families and no earthquakes for anyone.Christmas Lights 03

    Merry & Bright

I finally got my Christmas Cards sent out this morning. I had fun this year making all my own cards and since I've only got one Christmas stamp, the tree from Greetings Galore I had to try and be a bit more creative. Here's one of the cards I made. I stamped the tree and coloured it with my markers and then heat embossed it with half and half clear EB and dazzling diamonds. So it's nice and sparkley. I've used that technique on quite a few of my Christmas cards. I think this time of year you need lots of glitter (not that I need an excuse). I also got most of my Christmas shopping done, the hardest bit now is keeping the presents hidden from the girls. We had fun putting our tree up in the weekend. It's not your traditional tree - there's lots of pink! The best bit is seeing the girls getting excited, Baylee has left numerous notes in the letterbox for Santa, instructing him on what she wants.  I'm hoping what she gets exceeds her expectations!!

    Where's Time Gone???

I can't believe the year's almost gone.  I haven't updated this page for ages, I my change it to my stamping blog as I like the layouts and it's easier to negotiate.  I'm at work it's almost 2 in the morning and I would much rather be tucked up in bed.  Anyway I hope you all out there are well and take care over Christmas.

    Change

I've finally had enough!! My laptop kept shutting down for no reason - causing many tears for my daughter when in the middle of a game! So I now have an iMac which is very different from what I'm used to. So if you have any tips I'l love to hear them!! Especially on how to install my scanner - I can't find an application to run the install programme???? I just hope the computer tech can rescue my photos still trapped on my laptop. And how do I change my font and colour????

    Stampin' Up

I've finally done it and signed up as a demonstrator for Stampin' Up!  It seemed more things were being added to my wishlist than were coming off, so it made sense.  So to start I've set up another blog where anyone interested in stamping can check it out and get info on how to make cards and the different techniques used and if they live locally can see what's coming up with workshops.

So if you're interested check it out www.madebyme79.blogspot.com

    Made By Me

This is one of the reasons why I love stamping - one simple stamp two completely different looks.  I made these cards after checking out splitcoast for inspiration.  I got this stamp set as I knew it would come in handy with all the pregnant girls at work at the moment.  So this is the start of the many baby cards I need to make.

    200 Christmas Cards

One of my newest hobbies and quickly becoming a passion is cardmaking.  And on Saturday myself and about 10 other women got together to get a head start on our Christmas cards.  Over 4 hours, numerous cups of coffee, rolls of tape and pineapple lumps we made around 200 Christmas cards.  You'd think it would've been a noisy afternoon but it was surprizingly quiet with concentration.  A huge thanks to Michelle for putting it all together, including precutting all the cardstock, designing the cards and to her husband for letting us take over their house.

    Taking My Own Advice

I weighed myself the other day - and I got a fright.  I'm not going to disclose what the numbers were - but they weren't good - they weren't morbid either, but I know if I don't act now it will only get worse.  I thought I'd been pretty good, drinking lots of water and exercising regularly and I know you don't go by weight only but also measurements blah, blah but it's still gut wrenching.  (Maybe the block of Caramello Chocolate I ate the other night played into it..)

So yesterday I was good.  I drank the compulsory 2 litres of water, I had breakfast, I had a banana before I went to work so I didn't get the sugar cravings and end up at the Hospital shop buying up large on lollies, and I only had a hot drink at supper not he usual chips and cake that gets passed around (I work the late shift so things get a little messed up with meal times).

Today has started well - I've had breakfast, and shortly I'll have a good lunch... and I'll start on the water.  It's too cold and windy to walk so maybe I'll jump on the exercise bike or do some pilates.

Tomorrow - that's where things usually go bad - the next day, something comes up, I get cravings and think just one choc biscuit, by the end of the afternoon the packets empty.

Well we'll see.  Maybe posting this will keep me focused - I'll let you know.

    Tornados in Taranaki

Well it's been an exciting time in the 'Naki' the last couple of days.  We've had tornados everywhere!!

From down south in Hawera right through up north to Waitara.  It's not unusual to have a small one every now and then but to get this many so wide spread within such a short time frame and the amount of damage done, it's a little scary.  Our home luckily hasn't been damaged, the closest one got to us was about a km away.  But friends have been affected with lost roofs and shattered windows.  And a couple have been cut off as the roads are blocked with fallen trees. As well as that we've had torential rain, thunder and lightning and high winds.

I've always had it in my head that we're little old NP, nothing happens here, we have a few storms and a bit of flooding every now and then, we've had one big cyclone that I can remember but my home wasn't damaged and it was great cause I didn't have to go to school.  But I think now I'll drag out the Civil Defence flyer I got in the mail the other day and make sure we've got a few spare batteries for the torch and grab a few more cans of food from the supermarket.
For those who are interested there are some pics from TVNZ at www.tvnz.co.nz

    What to write????

I haven't written for a few days, it's hard do you write this for you or for those who read it.
It's been busy at work.  Somedays sad, sometimes you want to give your patients a hug and cry with them, others you want to strangle (or at least take their call bell away).  I do love it though you never know what's going to happen next somedays then others you know can predict the shift right from the start.

The taboo word is quiet - you never mention it, you know that if you do things will turn to crap. - Although it's always more interesting when things do turn to crap, it doesn't sound good but when a patient starts to crash you get the adrenaline going, everyone pulls together as a team until everything is sorted.  When it's quiet you can't be arsed doing anything and that's when you forget stuff.  The most frustrating thing about where I work are the patients who don't really need to be there - well they do but if they got off their backsides and did a little exercise and stopped having takeaways 5 days a week they'd be alot healthier.  These are the ones when we put them on a low fat diet their families kindly bring in the chips and chocolate and coke etc...  I'm lucky I have great work mates though - we have some good laughs, if we didn't we'd cry or end up locked up.

So if you reading this go for a walk and cook your own tea tonight.  I don't want to see you at my work place!

The Atonement Child - Francine Rivers

Reading this may have saved my baby's life, I finished the book the day before I discovered I was pregnant.

"I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand.  Do not be afraid.  I will help you.  I have done this so that people may see and know, may consider that the hand of the Lord has done this, that the Holy One of Israel has created this child.  I am he, beloved.  I am he who will sustain you.  I have made you, and I will carry you.  Your maker is your husband, the Lord Almighty is his name, the Holy One is your redeemer, the God of all the earth.  I will turn darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth.  These are the things I will do, beloved.  I will not forsake you.  I am He who blots out transgressions and remembers sin no more."

    One Good Thing

It's hard somedays, life is busy.  Here's a few ideas to try and make life a little better - for everyone.

    For yourself
    • Drink a glass of water instead of a coke
    • Take the stairs
    • Walk an extra block
    • Sit with a book for a while
    • Have a piece of fruit instead of a muffin/choc bar
    • Have the choc bar as well (chocolate is good for you according to Dr Oz)

    For someone else

    • Give someone a call
    • Go out for coffee
    • Babysit so they can go out for coffee
    • Buy/pick a flower for someone (we don't always need a whole bunch)
    • Drop a coin in an expired meter (beware in someplaces you can ge arrested for this)

    For the environment

    • Try environmentally friendly washing powder (it does work)
    • Pick up a piece of litter
    • Recycle something
    • Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth
    • Walk to the dairy instead of taking the car

If you've read this far see it's not that hard. Just one thing will make you feel good and that will transfer to those around you.  In my home we're starting to slowly change things.  We're recycling more, changing to chemical and toxin free products - from washing powder to bodywash and deodorant.  And it's actually not expensive, there are now a good range of them out there.  We're trying to drink more water and do a little more exercise.  Working in a surgical ward I deal with patients with cancer.  What scares me about this is that they are getting younger (and I haven't been nursing all that long).  It doesn't matter what lifestlye you have, you can still be at risk.  Hopefully we can work to eliminate those risks from ourselves, our households and our environment.  Hopefully I can keep up with doing one good thing.  Let me know how you go or if you have anymore ideas.

    The Start of My Addiction

Now my addictions are fairly harmless, nothing like drugs or alcohol or anything like that - except maybe my chocolate addiction which is now forcing me to start exercising and eating more salads.  But my scrapbooking addiction started when Isabella was about 3 months old when I came across a scrapbooking kit.  I've since redone those first two pages cause they didn't look right.

I started out with just one drawer of supplies, now it's increased to my girls still having to share a bedroom and me having an office/scrapbooking room.  Thank goodness the coverted Cricut came out in time for me to talk Mum and Dad into getting it for me for Christmas!  My addiction has also extended to stamping, cardmaking and canvases. My highlight of the year so far was when Stampin' Up came to NZ.  My original wishlist came to $1200 and is continuously growing.

What I love about it is it's never ending there is always a new technique to learn, there is always new products coming out and the only thing limiting you is your imagination - even then there are countless websites and magazines to help provide inspiration.  It's a way of expressing yourself as well as journalling your life and your familys.  It's a great gift I'm working on an album for my mum and doing canvases for my sister.  Anyone can do it, my five year old has started her first album and loves it - her pages are very pink and sparkly, but in years to come she'll be able to look back and remember what she loved.

Well I could go on and on.  But I'm off to the shops to stock up on more supplies.  Enjoy the lastes cards and pages I've uploaded.

    Psalm 34 v1-10

    I will extol the Lord at all times;
his praise will always be on my lips.
    My soul will boast in the Lord;
let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
    Glorify the Lord with me;
let us exalt his name together.

    I sought the Lord and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.
    Thoses who look to him are radiant;
their faces are never covered with shame.

This poor man called, the Lord heard him:
he saved him out of all of his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps around
    those who fear him,
    and he deliveres them.

    Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the man who takes refuge
    in him.
Fear the Lord, you his saints,
for those who fear him lack nothing.
The lions may grow weak and hungry,
but those who seek the Lord lack no
    good thing.
